How Wind Shield Wiper Mechanism Works in Your Car

The wind shield wipers of your car clean the windshield in the front. The wipers work by an electric circuit. The wind shield wipers are equipped with a special mechanism to moving back and forth across the windshield countless times and thus clear the water from the windshield. On their highest speed, they moves very fast shaking the car from side to side. Let us discuss in this article the working mechanism of wind shield wipers

Working of Wind shield Wipers mechanism in Your Car

The wind shield wipers runs on two mechanisms to perform required task:
They are as follows
  1. A combination electric motor and worm gear reduction to reduce required power to the wipers.
  2. A connecting link that converts the rotational output of the motor into the back-and-forth motion of the wipers.
  • Electric Motor and worm Gear Reduction
    • This mechanism is used to accelerate the wiper blades.
    • It takes lot of force to accelerate the wiper blades back and forth across the windshield quickly.
    • To generate this force a worm gear is used on the output side of electric motor.
    • The worm gear can increase the torque of the motor by 30 times. The output of the gear reduction operates a connecting link hat moves the wipers back and forth.
    • Inside the motor-gear assembly there is an electronic circuit that is used to sense when the wipers are in rest position.
    • The circuit provides the power to the wipers until they are parked at the rest position of the windshield
    •  then cuts the power to the motor.
    • This is how the electric motor and worm gear mechanism of wind shield wipers works.
  • The connecting linkage to convert the rotational output of motor into back-and forth motion
    • A cam is fixed to the output shaft of the worm gear reduction.
    • This cam rotates around the wiper motor.
    • The cam is connected to a rod as the cam rotates the link moves the rod back and forth.
    • This rod is attached to a short rod that actuates the wiper blade on the driver's side.
    • Another long rod transmits the force from the driver-side to the passenger-side wiper blade.
    • Due to this mechanism both the passenger wipers and the driver' side wipers moves in back and forth direction.
    • Windshield wiper systems are designed to wipe the wind shield/window for about 1.5 million times in their lifetime.
    • These are the two mechanism that are equipped inside the car wind shield system to move the wipers back and forth.

Diagnosis of Dental Gum Diseases

Diagnosis of gum diseases are done to examine gums whether there is any plaque and tartar formation or any inflammation of gums and loss of bone under teeth. Dentist perform the following tests to diagnose the gum diseases.

Dentist Stratford
Physical examination of gums
Dentist visually examines the gum tissue surrounding each and every tooth. The color and shape of the gum tissue is compared with healthy gum. Dentists check for redness, bleeding from gums and swelling of gums surrounding the teeth. If the gum between the teeth is blunt then it can be diagnosed as periodontal disease. Sensitivity of tooth around the gum line is due to the receding gums.

Taking x-rays
Dental bite wing x-rays are taken which gives the pictures showing the level of underlying bone. These will help you to diagnose whether the bone has lost due to periodontal diseases. Eighteen mouth x-rays are taken to make up the full mouth series to diagnose the gum problems.

Testing teeth movement
Teeth movement is determined by pushing the teeth between two instrument handles and observe the mobility. The mobility of teeth indicates that there is a possibility of loss of teeth.

Sensitivity of teeth
Sensitivity of teeth is done to diagnose the gum problems. Sensitivity of teeth is due to the receding gums. Receding gums indicates the sign of gum problems.

Measuring the gum pockets depth (Periodontal Probing)
Periodontal probing is a technique used to determine how severe the gum problem is. It is used to diagnose the gum problem by using a instrument called probe. It is a fine instrument where tip is inserted into the pockets of the teeth to determine the depth of the pockets surrounding the teeth. In this, probing is done 3 times on cheek side and 3 times on tongue side and determines the depth of the pockets.

Pockets measuring less than 3mm indicates that the gums are healthy. Pockets measuring more than 3mm to 5mm indicates that there is sign of gum diseases. If the pocket depth is more than 5mm it indicates that the disease condition is severe and there is loss of bone. It is a painless technique and it is more reliable and accurate.

An Introduction to Dental Implants

Dental implants are metallic surgical devices that are a replacement for missing or damaged teeth. There are many methods to replace missing teeth, but most people consider dental implants.

Dental Implants Cost
Advantages of dental implants
  • Implants look like natural teeth
  • Implants does not overload on adjacent teeth
  • Implants improve speaking and mastication capacity
  • Implants are fixed and long lasting.
History of implants
Transplantation of teeth made of ivory was first seen in Egyptian mummies. Dental implants have been in use since 1970. These implants are designed to eliminate the problems created by dentures and fixed bridges. In olden days dental implants were made of copper. Now a days, implants come in various shapes, such as:
  • Cylindrical implants
  • Screw implants
  • Threaded implants
  • Plateau implants and
  • Perforate implants
Types of implants
  • Autoplastic implants: These implants are prepared by taking tissue from the same individual.
  • Homoplastic implants: These implants are prepared by taking from the same species.
  • Heteroplastic implants: These implants are prepared by taking from the different species.
  • Alloplastic implants: These implants are prepared from non-living material.
Materials used for preparation of implants
Implants are prepared using different materials such as:
  • Metals: Metals used are stainless steel, titanium, vitallium, cobalt chromium, etc. Titanium is most commonly used.
  • Ceramic material: Ceramic materials like plasma are sprayed on the implants and are bio compatible with the implants.
  • Polymeric materials: Polymeric materials like polytetraflouroethylene and polymethacrylate are used for preparation of implants.
  • Poly carbons: Poly carbons like carbon and stainless steel are used for preparation of implants. These are not used because they may brittle in some cases and reduces the success rate of implants.
Mechanisms involved in the implant placements:
There are 2 mechanisms involved in the placement of implant, they are:
  • Osseointegration: It is a process that is mostly used and is a successful type of implant. This implant takes around three to six months to anchor and heal.
  • Fibrointegration: Fibrointegrated implant is an early form of dental implants which is not used today, they are not as successful as osseointergration.
